 History of the British Royal Family

The British Royal Family has a long and complex history that dates back over a thousand years. It has evolved through different dynasties, political shifts, and historical events, playing a key role in shaping the United Kingdom.

Early Monarchy

The monarchy in England began with the early Anglo-Saxon kings. One of the most notable early rulers was Alfred the Great (reigned 871–899), who defended England from Viking invasions and laid the foundations of a unified kingdom.

Norman Conquest

In 1066, William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, invaded England and became King William I after defeating King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings. This event marked the beginning of the Norman dynasty and brought significant cultural and political changes.

Plantagenets and the Wars of the Roses

The Plantagenet dynasty ruled from the 12th to the 15th centuries, but internal conflicts eventually led to the Wars of the Roses between the houses of Lancaster and York. This civil war ended in 1485 when Henry Tudor (Henry VII) defeated King Richard III and founded the Tudor dynasty.

The Tudors

The Tudors ruled from 1485 to 1603. Famous monarchs include:

• Henry VIII – known for his six marriages and the English Reformation, which separated the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church.

• Elizabeth I – the "Virgin Queen", who presided over a golden age of exploration, literature, and victory over the Spanish Armada.

The Stuarts

The Stuart dynasty followed. Conflicts between the monarchy and Parliament led to the English Civil War, the execution of Charles I, and a brief period without a monarchy (the Commonwealth, under Oliver Cromwell). The monarchy was restored in 1660 with Charles II.

The Hanoverians and the British Empire

In 1714, the Hanoverian dynasty began with George I, a German prince who became king due to his Protestant faith. Under Hanoverian rule, Britain expanded its global empire, particularly during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), who became the symbolic figure of the vast British Empire.

The Modern Royal Family

After Queen Victoria, the royal family adopted the name House of Windsor during World War I, replacing the German-sounding "House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha".

Famous recent monarchs include:

• George VI, who led during WWII.

• Queen Elizabeth II (1952–2022), the longest-reigning British monarch, known for her dedication and stability.

• Her son, King Charles III, succeeded her in 2022.
